GPO 1208 Anglepoise, Herbert Terry & Sons.
Brass & steel arm construction.
This is the second of these lamps we have had the pleasure to restore in the last 5 years. The first was purchased from a retired GPO engineer who explained that they were the standard issue lamp for repair workshops maintaining the old Strowger exchange systems. They may have also been military/air ministry issue as we have found an image of the M.O.D telephone exchange workshop in the secretive 'Burlington Bunker' close to us in Corsham. Burlington was a complete underground city to house the government and civil service in the event of a nuclear catastrophe
Almost identical to the standard 1208 this lamp has a few notable differences. A considerably smaller shade, shade ring/holder and bulb holder which accepts an small bayonet bulb. Constraining bars to the base fork, restricting backward movement (suggesting use close to a control panel or exchange board), and the use of wing nuts for adjustment instead of the more commonly found knurled nut. The four springs are held on hexagonal shaped pegs, tension can be adjusted by moving their position up or down in a row of four holes.
The upper two and lower back arms are constructed of tubular brass, riveted on to the the elbow joints. The lower side arms are flat, rigid steel, a more robust option for a harsh working environment than lightweight tubular aluminium arms. This lamp was bought without a base but is shown with a Herbert Terry bench clamp, or we can supply a variety of options for desk or wall mounting if preferred.
