Edwardian Sunday School Roll Up Banner.
Hand painted on glazed chintz, ebonized battens.
This wonderful and unusual, decorative banner was probably used as a teaching aid and as a solemn reminder to children to behave in school or church. The wording is attributed to Martha Evans Shelley, first appearing in Curwen's 'Childs Own Hymn Book' in 1844.
The words have been painstakingly hand painted in a onto a light glazed chintz in black paint which is characterfully worn in places. The banner has been thumb tacked top and bottom to ebonised poles, the bottom pole having lovely decorative turned finial ends.
This looks to have been stored rolled up and forgotten for some time as there are characterful dust and water marks staining the fabric.
